École polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne

EPFL is one of Europe’s leading research and education institutions, with 3000 staff (400 professors), 2000 PhD students and 8000 BSc/MSc students.
The Institute of Mechanical Engineering at EPFL has a group specialised on fuel cells. The FUELMAT Group (Fuels and Materials Electrochemistry) led by Dr Jan Van Herle has more than 15 years of experience in research and development of solid oxide fuel cells. Its particular strength is the coupling between modeling (for both design and performance) and experimental cell and stack work (validation; locally resolved measurements using segmented SRU testing; components testing for model input and calibration).

Project Role

  • Research partner
  • Characterisation and modeling of stack heating profile for the sealant curing
  • Code development together with AVL; identification of failure modes and characteristic frequencies
  • Testing and characterisation of novel coatings and of a ceramic filter for exhaust trace gas elimination
  • Leader of the dissemination and exploitation work package (WP6)
